There were cases he was aware of where mobile games were used to lure players into traps. Criminals used app’s geolocation feature to target unwitting victims. It had led some people into hazardous situations. The tricksters must have used a game to lure victims to an isolated trap somewhere. Any app, which directs users to capture for example imaginary creatures superimposed onto the real world, could tempt players into secluded areas where they could be easily robbed. Using the geolocation feature, the robbers were able to anticipate the location the victims were going for. Luring players in was not a problem if criminals knew how to do it. They were using the app to place a honeypot in an abandoned parking lot, and they could see the players coming for it. He had always been cautious with such apps because they would potentially alert strangers of someone’s location. However, now he was there with them.
One man started to talk. It was another voice in the dark. He had been abducted while playing such an app at 4 in the morning. He said that he had had a long night and he had not been able to sleep. He realized that a new game using such features had just recently been released and he wanted to try it. He walked outside, and a car started following him. Then he saw that there was a particular item in the game he could catch on a graveyard, and he did not think long and went there. He thought he had shaken off the pursuer, but he realized that the car was waiting for him at the graveyard. The criminals were taking advantage of the geolocation feature by creating a designated spot with a trophy to lure unsuspecting players. It was his fault.
He asked the people in the trailer how they got there. One of them was screaming that he had been abducted from the street. Another one, seemingly younger said that he had been kidnapped from his home following a virtual ghost. At first, he could not make any sense of it, but then it was as if the scales fell from his eyes. They must have used some augmented reality solution encouraging people to follow actors in the game or to go looking for them and hunting them. He knew that with augmented reality such abduction could happen quite quickly. Launching a program, which shows something like a ghost to follow to get points in a game or find something in the real world, could lead people into dark alleys. They urge especially kids to support them somewhere to get something at the end of a promised rainbow as if they could find a pot of gold. Some of these programs had been hijacked in the past. However, these games made children addictive so that the kids blanked out the risks playing those games.
